Which are the real causes of swollen gums?

It is an uncomfortable problem that requires professional intervention to be solved. But what are the causes of gum inflammation? What factors trigger the appearance of this problem? Despite being a fairly common situation, we are not always clear about why we can suffer from it. Don’t worry. We explain it to you in these next lines of our blog. Stay tuned.

Gum inflammation is a problem in which a person feels more swollen than usual, and can even change thickness and color. Did you know that, according to data from the Spanish Society of Periodontics and Osseointegration (SEPA), only 15% of Spanish adults between the ages of 35 and 44 have healthy gums? For this reason, we say that it is a common problem, since it affects the vast majority of the population.

Unfortunately, there is no single reason why we can suffer from problems with our gums. Hence, the need to put ourselves in the hands of professionals to determine its origin and be able to establish the most appropriate treatment.

Learn about the main causes of swollen gums
As we say, the factors that can trigger inflamed gums are diverse. Some of them can be temporary and others lead to a complex periodontal disease. Dr. Nicolás Aronna, specialist in Advanced Periodontics and medical director of the Advance Dental Institute, explains some of the main causes of this inflammation:

  • Gingivitis that produces the formation of tartar deposits that are not removed during brushing. This inconvenience is even more common for those patients who wear braces, since the metal parts make daily hygiene difficult, and can irritate the gums.
  • Periodontitis. It is the second phase of untreated gingivitis. When it worsens, periodontal pockets will form between the gums and teeth with the capacity to accumulate a large number of bacteria that will gradually destroy the tissues.
  • Nutritional deficit. It is another of the most common causes of inflammation of the gums, which may appear due to a lack of vitamin C or iron.
  • Hormonal imbalances. Mainly, during pregnancy, after childbirth, during the different phases of the menstrual cycle or also throughout puberty.
  • The consumption of various medications can also be the origin of cases of gum inflammation.

Facing this problem, there are many people who bet on adding the mouthwash to their daily hygiene routine. This can sometimes be more harmful than beneficial. Why do we say that its impact can be negative? Mainly, because it will help to camouflage the inflammation, not to cure it, preventing the patient from going to a specialist and allowing the problem to escalate. Here, we leave you a previous post in this same space in which we explain if it is good to use the mouthwash daily. We hope it will be useful to you.

Before finishing, we want to make it clear to you that it is vital to put yourself in the hands of a qualified periodontist in case of suffering from gum inflammation. Without being treated, its effects may reach the bone itself, complicating treatment and aggravating all symptoms. Make an appointment with Dr. Nicolás Aronna, our specialist in Advanced Periodontics, to have an accurate diagnosis on time and avoid major problems.
